Spartans Finish December with a Close Loss

Scarborough kept it close, but the Spartans lost their final game of December to Aldine, 64-61 Wednesday afternoon.  The defeat gave the Spartans a 5-9 record for the month.  They are 6-11 over-all this season heading into 2016.

Scarborough starts out the new year on Saturday afternoon(January 2).  The Spartans take on Milby at 3 pm at the Scarborough gym.

Spartans Take the Floor Again this Week

After more than a week away from games for the holidays, the Scarborough basketball team(6-10) returns to action  this week with two games in their home gym.  The Spartans play Aldine on Wednesday (December 30) at 3 pm.  After that, they kick off the new year against Milby on Saturday (January 2), also at 3 pm.

Spartans Hit "Halfway Point" of the Season

With the end of their participation in the HISD Tournament Friday night, Scarborough has reached the approximate midway point of their season.  The Spartans, 6-10, have 13 games remaining on their schedule.  11 of those games are district contests.

Coach Martin Wall and his team don't take the floor again until December 30 at 3 pm.  The Spartans will take on Aldine at Scarborough in their next game.

Spartans Fall in Close One in Houston ISD Tournament Opener

Scarborough lost their opening game in the Houston ISD Tournament Thursday.  The Spartans dropped the contest to Austin by a 77-73 score.

With the loss, Scarborough moves into the tournament's consolation bracket.  They will face Sterling Friday at 4:30 pm at Chavez High School.

Spartans Fall to Davis in Overtime

Scarborough dropped their game with Davis 79-72 in overtime on Tuesday night.  The Spartans fell to 6-8 for the season.  It was their second consecutive overtime game.

Scarborough will participate in the Houston ISD Tournament this weekend.  They start the tournament with a game against Austin on Thursday at 3 pm.  That contest is scheduled to be played at Chavez High School.

Spartans Face Davis Tuesday Night at Home

It's another busy week for the Spartans.  After taking 7th place in the HEB Wildcat Classic over the weekend, Scarborough (6-7) is scheduled to face Davis at 5:30 pm on Tuesday night.  That game will take place at Scarborough High School.

This weekend, the Spartans will participate in the Houston ISD basketball tournament. Their first game in the tournament will be against Austin High School at 3 pm on Thursday.  That contest is slated to take place at Chavez High School.

Games in the tournament run through Saturday. There is a possibility of one or two Spartans' games being played at Scarborough High School on Friday.

Spartans Fall In District Opener

Scarborough fell to Furr, 56-50 Tuesday night in the district opener for both clubs.  The Spartans, 4-5, head to Corpus Christi for the HEB Wildcat Classic this weekend.

Spartans' Week Includes Start of District Play/Trip To Corpus Christi

As they come off of the consolation championship in the Royal Basketball Tournament, here is everything you need to know about the Spartans' schedule for the upcoming week.

The Spartans begin district play against Furr on Tuesday night.  That game is slated for 4:30 on December 8 at the Pavilion.

Over the weekend, Scarborough will be making a trip to the Corpus Christi vicinity.  From Thursday to Saturday, the Spartans will play four games in the HEB Wildcat Classic at Gregory-Portland High School.   Their first game will start at 2 pm Thursday against San Antonio Lanier.

Spartans Claim Consolation Championship in Royal Tournament

Scarborough knocked off host Royal, 58-55 Saturday afternoon to claim the Consolation Championship in the Royal Basketball Tournament.  The Spartans won three straight games Friday and Saturday to close out their tournament participation.

Scarborough begins its district schedule on Tuesday night, December 8.  They face Furr at 4:30 at the Pavilion.

Spartans Pick up Second Win of Season on Tuesday Night

Scarborough evened their season record at 2-2 with an 80-71 win over Houston Austin Tuesday night.  The game was played in the Spartans' home gym.

The Spartans play in the Royal Falcons Basketball Tournament this weekend (Thursday-Saturday) in Brookshire, Texas.

Spartans Start a Busy December on Tuesday

Starting on Tuesday, the Spartans basketball team has a busy December on their agenda.  Including the game on Tuesday night at home against Austin, Scarborough, 1-2, will play four individual games and participate in three tournaments in the final month of the calendar year.

I'm not sure how many games are involved in each of the tournaments.  However, the Spartans should play a total of about 15 or 16 games before 2015 ends.

Magnolia West Runs Over the Spartans

Magnolia West had its way with Scarborough Monday night at the Spartans' gym.  In Scarborough's home opener, Magnolia West dominated on both ends of the floor and came away with a 76-32 victory.

The loss knocked the Spartans' record down to 1-2 for the season. Their next game is against Austin at Scarborough on Tuesday, December 1 at 7 pm.

How Will the Spartans Build on Last Season's Succeses?

NOTE:  This preview was written prior to the opening of the Spartans season.  Circumstances led to its delayed posting.

The 2014-15 Scarborough Spartans basketball team was arguably the best squad in the school’s history.  On November 17, this year’s club hits the floor with expectations to build on the successes of last year’s team.

After guiding the 2014-15 Spartans to 23 wins and the first play-off victory in school history, Coach Martin Wall is looking to push his team to achieve more in 2015-16.  The Spartans are slated to play eight state-ranked teams in the next three months, including Sam Houston High School (Houston Math and Science), ranked in the top 20 in Class 6A.  “I felt with our success last year,” Wall said, “We needed to take another step forward as a program. The goal this season is getting to the play-offs prepared for success.”

First and foremost, the Spartans are led by senior Hunter Janacek.  Janacek, who has signed a letter of intent with Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, is the reigning offensive player of the year in District 22-4A.  Janacek, whose three-point shooting has received statewide accolades, can carry the team when the need arises.   

In addition to Janacek, Quinton Hudson, Tahj Parrish, and Damani Wheeler bring substantial experience from last season with them to the 2015-16 season.  According to Wall, these veterans will “help the new additions acclimate to (Scarborough’s) program standards.”

With five seniors departed from last season’s team (including Jorge Martinez, Jonathan Garcia-Loza and Jonathan Crew), Wall is looking to numerous new faces to be a part of the Spartans’ next round of success.  Senior guard JaMeluis McIntosh is a “lightning quick guard.”  Senior twins, Jamaal and Jamond Miles provide length and athletic ability as well as outside shooting.  All of the Spartans’ new faces are called on to exhibit toughness and character according to Wall.

One part of Wall’s plan to take the program to a new level this season includes a trip to the Corpus Christi area.  The Spartans are preparing to play in the Wildcat Classic Tournament hosted by Gregory-Portland High School.  The Spartans will be on the road from December 10-12.  The 16-team tournament includes many of the top teams in the state.  According to Wall, “The best part of this tournament is getting to take the guys out of town for a couple of days. Most of them have not had this kind of experience, and getting to spend two nights in a hotel and eating out with their team will be great for them.”

Wall and the Spartans are excited about this year’s team.  They will continue to bring their trademark defense and team play to the court with an added level of talent over the last two seasons’ squads.  Wall hopes the Spartans will be “fun to watch and make our community and school proud.”

Two Days Until Basketball Games Resume at Scarborough's Gym

The Scarborough Spartans, led by Lafayette College commit, Hunter Janacek, started their full slate of games this week.  I'm looking forward to seeing how Coach Martin Wall's team follows up on last season's historic play-off run, which included the first post-season victory in school history.

I am the most anticipatory of the team's five games played on campus.  Full disclosure, I live a five minute walk from the campus, and I have greatly enjoyed being able to saunter down the street and watch this team grow the past two seasons.

Their first on campus game is slated for Monday, two days from today.

Spartans Hit a Big Wall in Game Two

Scarborough fell to Houston Math, Science and Tech on Friday night, 92-46.  It was the Spartans second game of the season, and they fell to 1-1.  Math, Science and Tech is in Class 6A, and is ranked second in the Houston area in that classification.

Next up for Scarborough is their home opener on Monday night at 7 pm against Magnolia West.

Big Challenge for Spartans Friday Night

With a season opening win behind them, the Scarborough Spartans basketball team faces a huge challenge Friday night.  The 1-0 Spartans will take on top-ranked Sam Houston High School (aka Houston Math Science and Tech).  Sam Houston is the #2 ranked 6A team in the Greater Houston area according to the Houston Chronicle.

Friday's contest is scheduled for 7 pm at Sam Houston.

Spartans win season opener Over Northbrook

Scarborough knocked off Northbrook in their season opener Tuesday night.  The Spartans won the game at Coleman Coliseum, 79-59.  On Friday, the Spartans play at Houston Math Science and Techonology.

Spartans Hit the Floor Tomorrow Night

The season is here. Tomorrow night, the Scarborough Spartans start another basketball season. Coming off of a 23-win season and the school's first-ever play-off victory, the Spartans face Northbrook at Coleman Coliseum.

Update on Expansion of Antoine Drive

The City of Houston Public Works and Engineering Department hosted a community meeting a couple of weeks ago at the Near Northwest Management District's office on Antoine. Attendees learned Antoine will be expanded from four lanes to six lanes beginning at Victory and running south to Hwy. 290.

It took a while before attendees received a link to the presentation, but here's the link. Residents can provide feedback on the Public Works and Engineering Department's plan for expanding Antoine until November 30, 2015.

Spartan Senior Has Business to Take Care of Before Season Opener

Before taking the floor for the 2015-16 season, Scarborough Senior Hunter Janacek has a little bit of business to take care of next Wednesday afternoon.  Janacek who was the District 22-4A Offensive Player of the Year last season is scheduled to formalize his commitment to Lafayette University on November 11 by signing a National Letter of Intent.

Janacek and his Spartan teammates are preparing to follow up on their historical 2014-15 campaign, which included the first basketball play-off win in school history.  Janacek will be at Lafayette, in Easton, Pennsylvania for the 2016-17 school year.

Lafayette is hosting an online special on the 11th, during which they will reveal their signing class, including Janacek.

Van Hekken Helps Heroes Stay Alive

Andy Van Hekken pitched seven scoreless innings, before allowing two eighth inning runs to the Doosan Bears, as the Nexen Heroes staved off elimination in the first round of the Korean Baseball play-offs.

Van Hekken allowed three hits and one walk through the first seven frames, and his Nexen teammates built a 5-0 lead.  Van Hekken allowed a pair of runs before being relieved with two outs in the eighth.  The Heroes' bullpen closed out a 5-2 Nexen victory.

Nexen now trails the Best of Five Series two games to one.  Game Four is scheduled for Wednesday night in South Korea.

Andy Van Hekken and his Nexen teammates are facing elimination from the Korean Baseball play-offs heading into Tuesday's game against the Doosan Bears.  Doosan holds a 2-0 lead over Nexen in the Best of Five series heading into Tuesday's game three.

Van Hekken, who is in his fourth season with Nexen, is slated to start the potential elimination game. Van Hekken was 15-8 with a 3.62 ERA in 32 regular season starts.  The game is scheduled to begin at 6:30 Korea time. That's 5:30 a.m. Tuesday in Van Hekken's native Michigan.

Spartans Beat Kipp Sunnyside

The Scarborough football team won its first game since 2009 on Friday night.  The Spartans knocked off Kipp Sunnyside 18-14 to end a 59-game losing streak.  The team's last win before Friday was registered over Austin on September 10, 2009.

Spartans Heading to Corpus Christi Area this Season

After its successes last season, the Scarborough Spartans basketball team is apparently a hot item. The Spartans have been invited to play in the Gregory-Portland Tournament from December 10-12. Gregory-Portland is located in the Corpus Christi vicinity.  This distant location means that for the first time in a long time, the Spartans will be staying on the road during a tournament.

A road tournament results in the added expense of hotels and more, so a Go Fund Me account was set up by a fan of the team to help pay for this road trip.  As you can see here, the necessary $1800 was raised quickly by Spartan supporters. (NOTE: The goal has been raised since the first goal was met.)

Fans can still contribute and support the Spartans 2015-16 season.  According to Coach Martin Wall, additional funds are still needed for the rest of season.  The team is also scheduled to play tournaments in Hempstead and Royal.

Jesus Loves us when we sweat- Real Grace Reflection #24

You might not believe me if I tell you that this Real Grace Reflection was inspired by the fact that my family will be spending the night in our Houston home with no air conditioning. However, this story is true. I am just about to head to bed and the prospect of a warmer than usual evening sends me to the keyboard tonight.

In the summer of 1989, I spent my second summer on the staff at Camp Lone Star.  During the final week of the summer, I served as a counselor in a building known as The Last Resort. The Last Resort (and the Hip Hut) was not air conditioned at that time, and it was only used to house extra staff back in 1989, not campers.  However, for some reason, both The Last Resort and The Hip Hut housed campers that special week.

Needless to say, we sweated quite a bit that week, but we made the best of it. The female campers in the Hip Hut that week, led by Joti Williams, did the same. (After thinking about it some more, I seem to recall Joti was the Junior Staff in the Hip Hut.)

My understanding is that that week was the final one ever that The Last Resort and The Hip Hut housed campers in a non-climate controlled environment.  If I'm not mistaken, The Last Resort now has A/C. The Hip Hut has been torn down.

I don't remember much about that week in The Last Resort except for the big fan, and a homesick camper who cried a lot on the first night. However, I do remember the song the campers made up and sang for the whole camp at some point during the week.

From the Street Beside My Window- Real Grace Reflection #23

Not too long before I wrote this reflection on L.O.M.T.'s theme REAL GRACE, I saw a special on TV about NASA's exploration mission to Pluto.  It was pretty amazing to me to learn about the work that has gone into that project.  Somewhere in my mind, it inspired these lines about the long-lasting omni-presence of REAL GRACE

NOTE ON THE TITLE: After writing these lyrics, I considered what title to put on them.  During this process, I remembered HEART OF ME, a song written by Craig Oldenburg when he served at Camp Lone Star a few decades ago.  It struck me that the message of HEART OF ME is the foundation on which a loving heart can be built.  Thus, it seems to me that HEART OF MINE is in some ways a sequel to HEART OF ME.

Skeeters Officially out of First Half Race

With four games remaining in the Atlantic League's first half, Southern Maryland has clinched the Freedom Division title, eliminating the Sugar Land Skeeters from contention.  Southern Maryland's record entering play on Thursday stands at 39-27. The Skeeters are 34-32.

The Skeeters wrap up their first half schedule with a three-game series at Southern Maryland Friday through Sunday.  After the all-star break, the two teams face off again July 10-12, beginning the second half at Sugar Land's Constellation Field.

He must be blind, deaf...and dumb-Real Grace Reflection #20

I'm sure that most of you who read this post are constantly surrounded by people who you get along with, people who inspire you, people who behave the way you expect them to.  This post, which includes a reflection on L.O.M.T.'s theme REAL GRACE, is not for you.

This post is for the small minority of you who encounter people who rub you the wrong way, people who push all your buttons, people who make you pull your hair out.  On those rare occasions that you encounter such a person(even if the person annoys you is you), I hope this post can serve as a reminder that with REAL GRACE, they are loved, even if not by you.

A Brief note about the title:  When I was writing the poem, one of the couplets that ended up on the paper was:  "He must be blind, deaf and dumb, to love such a smelly bum."  It didn't really fit in the poem itself, but I thought part of it would be a good title.

Skeeters Leap into First Place Tie

What a difference nine days can make.  After last Friday, June 5, the Sugar Land Skeeters trailed Southern Maryland Blue Crabs by 5 1/2 games in the race for the Atlantic League's Freedom Division First Half Championship. Now, heading into an off day Monday, the two teams are tied heading into the home stretch of the first half.

How did it happen?  Most importantly, the Skeeters won 10 straight games.  The completed a perfect eight-game homestand on Sunday afternoon.  At the same time, Southern Maryland lost five of nine contests.

Starting Tuesday, Sugar Land plays 19 games in 19 days to wrap up their first half schedule.  Their final two games of the first half are scheduled for July 3 and 4 at Southern Maryland.

The Unyielding Gaze- Real Grace Reflection #17

This REAL GRACE reflection was actually written almost two decades before L.O.M.T. decided to use REAL GRACE as its annual theme. "The Unyielding Gaze" was composed during preparations for the summer of 1996 when L.O.M.T.'s theme was SOMEHOW, LORD, YOUR LOVE STILL LOOKS FOR ME.

I decided to post it here since L.O.M.T. is gearing up to for another summer season, which kicks off this Sunday, June 7.

God Must Think I'm a Bad Ass- Real Grace Reflection #16

Since there is not a poem included, I'm not sure if this qualifies as an official reflection on LOMT's summer theme, REAL GRACE.  However, I just made the executive decision to post it as such anyway.

In the wake of the flooding in Houston this week, there was a story on the local news that caught my eye.  After having her home in a Houston neighborhood flooded, a woman put numerous items in her front yard so they could dry.  Unfortunately, some folks stole many of the items in broad daylight.

Needless to say, the lady was disappointed by what happened to her(she's also a cancer survivor); however, part of her response caught my ear in a positive way.  She referenced the scripture about God not giving someone more than they can handle(I Corinthians 10).  After reflecting on that verse the challenges that have recently come her way: flooded house leading to stolen items, on top of cancer, she decided "God must really think I'm a bad ass."

Quite a perspective on facing trials and tribulations.  I not sure Job even put it in such an encouraging way in the face of his adversities.

Real Grace Continues- Real Grace Reflection #15

The following reflection on Camp Lone Star's 2015 theme, Real Grace, was written specifically for the young men and women who will serve on the camp's summer staff this summer.  I'm not sure of the exact schedule for the summer staff.  However, since the summer camp program kicks off on June 7, I assume that staff training is starting this weekend or soon thereafter.

Scarborough's baseball season ended with a play-off loss at Giddings Friday night.  The Spartans finished third in their district this season.

Spartans Baseball Team in Play-offs Friday

Scarborough's baseball team is scheduled to make an appearance in the play-offs this Friday.  The Spartans, who finished in third in District 21-4A will play at Giddings at 6 pm on May 8.

According to this weekend's THE LEADER (May 2, 2015), Scarborough distance runner, Jorge Martinez accepted a track and cross country scholarship from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Martinez, who won the 1600 meter and 3200 meter run in the recent district track meet, will also run those events in this weekend's Region III meet in Huntsville.

Skeeters Take Flight Again This Week

The Sugar Land Skeeters begin their fourth season of play this Thursday, April 23, facing the Lancaster Barnstormers at Constellation Field.  The Skeeters fell to Lancaster in last season's Atlantic League Championship Series.

For the second season, all of Sugar Land's home games will be streamed live on Watch ESPN.  Audio of road games will be available on KBRZ.com.

Scarborough Finishes Second in District Track Meet

The Scarborough boys Track and Field team garnered a total of 122 points to place second in the District 21-4A meet which concluded Saturday.  Wheatley won the competition.

Six Spartan athletes finished first or second in their event, thus qualifying for the Region III meet May 1-2 in Huntsville.  Jorge Martinez placed first in both the 1600 meter and 3200 meter runs.

The girls team collected 10 points in the meet.  One competitor, Alyssa Jones, qualified for the Regional meet with a second place finish in the 800 meter run.

The Scarborough Boys' Track and Field Team is currently in second place in the district meet with 60 points heading into Friday's final day of competition at Barnett Stadium. The field events and the 3200 meter run were completed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Spartans Season Ends in College Station

The Scarborough Spartans' soccer season ended Friday night with a 1-0 loss to Palestine in the Regional Semi-finals.  The Spartans finish play with a 15-6-1 record.

Scarborough's district rival Furr dropped out of the post-season Friday night as well.  The Brahmans lost to Center, 1-0.

Scarborough Carries the District 21-4A Flag to College Station

The Scarborough Spartans boys' soccer team continues its play-off run Friday night in College Station.  The Spartans (15-5-1) will face Palestine (24-1-3) at 7 pm at A&M Consolidated High School in the Region III Semi-finals.

Furr High School, who finished second to Scarborough in District 21-4A, plays in College Station as well. The Brahmans are slated to play Center High School at 5 pm, directly before the Scarborough/Palestine contest.

Another Legend in the Big Leagues. Who Will Be Next?

Delino DeShields became the 57th former Lexington Legend to play in the Major Leagues when he singled in his first at bat for the Texas Rangers on Wednesday night.  DeShields played for Lexington in 2011 and 2012 and leads the franchise in numerous offensive categories including career hits (234) and stolen bases (113).

Who will be the next former Legend to make it to make his debut? The top candidate is the franchise's career leader in pitching victories.

Luis Cruz appeared in a total of 66 games as a Legend from 2010-12. During that time, he chalked up 22 wins.  He also leads the franchise with 315 strikeouts.

Cruz, 24, begins this in Fresno, Houston's AAA affiliate.  He is on the Astros' 40-man roster, which makes him relatively easy to promote if a pitching need arises in Houston.

The Scarborough soccer team kept rolling in the play-offs with a 3-0 win over Stafford Tuesday night at Butler Stadium.  With the win, the Spartans move on to the Region III Semi-finals Friday night at A&M Consolidated High School in College Station.  They will play Palestine at 7 pm.

District 22-4A runner-up, Furr advanced as well.  The Brahmas will face Center High School at 5 pm Friday in College Station.

The regional finals are scheduled for Saturday 4 pm, also at A&M Consolidated High School.

Spartans Face Stafford on Tuesday

Scarborough's Boys' soccer team continues their play-off march on Tuesday night at Butler Stadium. The Spartans will take on Stafford(also the Spartans) at 6 pm, April 7 in the Region III Quarter-finals. The winner of the the game advances to Friday's Regional Semi-finals against Palestine or Gatesville.

Furr, who was the runner-up in Scarborough's district, is still in the play-offs as well.  The Brahmas will face Royal High School at 7:00 Tuesday night in Sealy.

Regardless of the Scoreboard- Real Grace Reflection (Special Edition)

As the poet of the Farmstros Village, I established a tradition of creating and posting a poem about a fictitious baseball team known as the Dukes every Good Friday. I enjoyed being able to share these poems with my readers as a way to commemorate the resurrection of Jesus.  When I departed the Farmstros offices, I wasn't sure if Dukes baseball would continue to be a part of my experience. I hoped it would.

As I discovered last spring, the Dukes are still playing baseball in the recesses of my imagination. This year's attempt to describe their exploits has been intermingled with another project currently dwelling in my cranium. As a result, the most recent Dukes poem, Regardless of the Scoreboard, is also a reflection on L.O.M.T.'s 2015 theme, REAL GRACE.

Regardless of the Scoreboard

It seemed a normal season

When the first game rolled around

Nobody saw it coming

It arrived without a sound

To some it looked like magic

That descended on the team

To others, it appeared the Dukes

Were living out a dream

There was a buzz around the team’s

Each pitch, each hit, each throw

And as the season moved along

The humming, it did grow

They did things well each night and day

They played with style and grace

And even when the Dukes did fall

They got back in the race

The Spring turned into Summer

And the Dukes maintained their roll

The fans came to the ballpark and

Cheered with their hearts and soul

They sat on edge for each pitch

Inning one to inning nine

Regardless of the scoreboard they knew

That their Dukes would be fine

A few folks were quite doubtful

They were sure good times would end

“It’s coming soon, the Dukes will show

Their face of old, again.”

Indeed, there was a group that “knew” the upswing couldn’t last

They waited for the team to “fail as they’ve done in the past.”

But good times did continue, through the summer into fall

The Dukes hit pot holes time to time

Yet, still they played good ball

Take me out to the ball game

Take me out to the crowd

They are our Dukes, and we’re all in

We can’t help but get loud

They rose and then they grinded

They did work as best they could

They nibbled on the corners

And when needed, swung the wood

The season ended leaving all the Dukes fans wanting more

They headed home and hoped for what the future had in store.

The Scarborough soccer team (14-5-1) knocked off El Campo on Thursday night to move on to the Regional Quater-finals.  They will play either Stafford on Monday or Tuesday of next week.

District 22-4A runner-up Furr advanced to the Regional Quarter-finals as well. Furr will play Royal next week.

The Scarborough Boys' Soccer team continues their play-off run on Thursday, April 2 at 5:30 at Butler Stadium.  The Spartans are slated to take on El Campo in the Area Round of the 4A play-offs. With a win, they advance to the regional quarter-finals (April 6-7) against the winner of the Sweeny/Stafford game.

District Champion Spartan Girls Soccer Ends Season

The Scarborough Girls Soccer team ended their championship season with a loss in the first round of the play-offs Friday. The Spartans, who won the District 22-4A title, fell to Sealy.

Spartans Bring Home District Awards in Basketball

Five members of the Scarborough Spartans basketball team, who won the first play-off game in school history, received awards in District 22-4A.  Junior Hunter Janacek led the list, bringing home the district's Offensive Player of the Year Award.  Quinton Hudson was honored as the Rookie of the Year.

Three seniors were honored as well.  Jonathan Garcia-Loza made first team all district.  Jorge Martinez and Jonathan Crew were named to the district's second team.

Heroes and Van Hekken Kick Off Season Saturday

Andy Van Hekken, who won the rough equivalent of Korean baseball's Cy Young Award in 2014, takes the hill for the Nexen Heroes in Saturday's season opener.  Van Hekken, 20-6 last season, gets the opening day nod at Mokdong Stadium in Seoul against the Hanwha Eagles.

The Heroes advanced to the Korean Series, where they fell to the Samsung Lions in 2014.  The opener is scheduled to begin at 2:00 in Korea (midnight, Friday, Houston time).

Spartans Move on to Next Round of Soccer Play-offs

The Scarborough boys' soccer team knocked off Navasota 4-3 on Thursday evening at Delmar Stadium.  The Spartans advance to play El Campo in the area round next week.

According to the team's Twitter account, the goals were scored by Montoni(2), Zapata, and Carrizales.

Astros Encourage Affiliates to Avoid Guaranteeing Wins

Well, Bryn M'Taggare't, you've done it again!!  As I've mentioned in this space previously, I don't seek out Ms. M'Taggare't's work, as its subject matter is not pertinent to this blog.  However, she has once more sent me some information that begs to be published.

Astros Encourage Affiliates to Avoid Guaranteeing Wins in the Future

The Astros look to avoid future misunderstandings with their minor league affiliates by discouraging them from including one popular promotion on their calendar.  In an announcement released by the team, all the club's minor league affiliates are encouraged to "avoid carrying out any promotion that promises that the team will win a particular game."

Many minor league teams have special nights where a win is promised to all fans in attendance. Traditionally, if the team loses, everyone in attendance receives a ticket or voucher for a ticket to a future game to compensate for the broken promise.

The Astros release on the matter continued, "We appreciate that our affiliates and fans are confident in our abilities; however, we feel a "Guaranteed Win" promotion puts undue pressure on the young men in our organization."

"We have done extensive statistical analysis of this type of promotion in the minor leagues over the last three years. We could not mathematically prove that such a guarantee serves as a jinx to teams. However, after finding that the guarantee is not upheld in nearly half the games, we decided that such a promotion is not a beneficial activity considering our focus on the development of young talent."

"We cannot force our affiliates to adhere to our wishes.  Yet, we are confident that they will cooperate on this matter."

One local media member had an interesting interchange concerning this announcement:

Local Media Member:  Shouldn't a prospect be able to deal with the pressure of playing in a guaranteed win game?  For example, would striking out to lose such a game be a disastrous impediment to a true prospect's development?

Astros:  We would hope in the face of such adversity, our prospect would be able to Shake It Off. However, we don't feel it is prudent to even take such a risk going forward.

The Bald Truth- Real Grace Reflection #11

A devotion I read recently referenced the verse about the hairs on our head being numbered by God. It struck me, as I reflected on LOMT's 2015 theme REAL GRACE, that if God numbers our every hair, we would consequently benefit from having more hair.  Follow me here, the more hair a person has, by default, the more attention it will require to number all of that hair.  More hair equals more attention...  Rogaine, anyone?

The Bald Truth about Real Grace

I realize I need more hair

From my head to my toe

And everywhere between--

In places where it doesn’t show

I plan to wake the follicles

As often as I can

I will not shy away from those who say,

“You’re such a hairy man”

For hair increase means I’ll be known

Top 25 Showdown at Cougar Field Tuesday Night

Two of the nation's top college baseball team will hit the field in Houston at Cougar Field Tuesday night.  In the first of three games between the two schools, #10 Rice and #22 Houston meet on the University of Houston campus at 6:30.  The Cougars (13-7) enter the contest with a five game winning streak.  Rice (15-7) has won its last seven games.

The Owls and Cougars are scheduled to meet two more times this season after Tuesday.  They will meet on April 14 at Rice and on May 12 at Constellation Field in Sugar Land. Houston swept three games from Rice in 2014.

Sterling Falls in 4A State Final

Sterling, who won District 22-4A this season, fell in the state championship game to Bridgeport.  The Raiders ended the season with a 31-6 record.

Sterling Keeps Playing One More Day

District 22-4A champion Sterling advanced to the state championship game, knocking off LaMarque Friday in the Alamodome.  The Raiders are slated to face Bridgeport at 7 pm on Saturday night for the state title.

Sterling Carries 22-4A Flag to State

The Sterling Raiders will represent District 22-4A in San Antonio next weekend.  The district champions knocked off Silsbee Saturday afternoon to win the Region III title and advance to the state tournament in San Antonio.

Sterling (#2 in state) will face La Marque at 3 pm Friday in the Alamodome.  In the other 4A semi-final at 1:30 pm, Dallas Madison (#3) plays Bridgeport (#5).

Hey, Potty Mouth- Real Grace Reflection #10

Reflection #10 on L.O.M.T.'s 2015 theme, REAL GRACE, is a short one. If my younger self met my current self, my younger self would be taken aback by some of the colorful additions to my vocabulary over the years.  This thought was the spark plug that led to the following lines.

Sterling Still Representing District 22-4A (and HISD)

Sterling High School, the District 22-4A champions, advanced to the Class 4A Region III finals with a victory over Tatum in Huntsville Friday night.  Sterling will face Silsbee in Saturday's Regional Final. After Friday, Sterling is the only representative of the Houston ISD still alive in the play-offs.

Wharton, who knocked off Scarborough in December in the Sweeny Tournament, has advanced to the Regional Final in Region IV.  Wharton is slated to face La Marque at Texas A&M-Kingsville Saturday afternoon.

Wall Promoted to Scarborough Athletic Director

According to this week's print edition of The Leader, Martin Wall has been promoted and will be Scarborough High School's Athletic Director starting next school year.

Wall, who led the Spartan boys' basketball team to its first play-off victory in school history this year, will take over the role from Ajani Sanders. Sanders, who is currently Scarborough's football coach and AD, will coach football at Westbury High School next year. Wall will continue to coach the basketball team at Scarborough.

Sterling Advances to Represent District 22-4A

One District 22-4A member has advanced to the Region III boys' basketball semi-finals.  Sterling, who won the district title, knocked off Hardin-Jefferson, 83-79 on Tuesday night.  Sterling advances to face Tatum in Huntsville on Friday night.

Wheatley, the district runner-up, fell Tuesday night to Silsbee, 83-79.  Silsbee, who ended Scarborough's post-season last week, moves on to face Mexia on the campus of Sam Houston State.

A Way to Support the Scarborough BASEBALL Team

You can support the Scarborough baseball team and watch the Astros play this season, all in one fell swoop.  As a fundraiser, the Spartan baseball team is selling vouchers that can be redeemed for Astros tickets.

The vouchers cost $27 each and are good for a seat in the Bullpen section in Minute Maid Park for any game in April, May, or June.  PLEASE NOTE: Opening Day and the series against the Yankees are excluded.

This time period covers 38 home dates for the Astros.  For bargain hunters, the average ticket price for the Bullpen section during those 38 dates is $34.24, so if you're planning to go to a game anyway, the vouchers represent a nice savings.

Additionally, the Spartans baseball program receives $7 for each voucher sold.  Vouchers are currently available in the school's front office.  You can get more information from Edgar Villalta, who is the baseball coach.  You can reach his page on Twitter through this link.

To launch this fundraiser, the baseball team had a chance to play a game on the Astros' home turf. The Spartans took the field at Minute Maid Park on Feburary 27.

A Look Back at the Spartans 2014-15 Season

The gym at Scarborough High School is quiet until next November.  The Spartans basketball team has wrapped up a season to remember.  Coach Martin Wall's club won 23 games, including the first play-off game in school history.  Here are a few highlights from the 2014-15 season.

The Season Opener- The Scarborough gym was rocking as a new season began on November 18. A 53-38 win over Northbrook got the schedule off to a great start.

Third Place in the Hempstead Christmas Classic- The Spartans won their first four games in this tournament December 18-20.  After dropping their fifth game, they bounced back to defeat Huntington and claim third place in the 12-team tournament.

A Win Over Wheatley- The Spartans got many people's attention when they knocked off Wheatley, 68-61.  It was in all likelihood, Scarborough's first-ever victory over the basketball powerhouse.

Play-off Bound- It took until the final game of the season for the Spartans to clinch their first play-off berth in a decade, but they did it.  A 60-58 victory over Washington assured Scarborough of a third-place district finish and a trip to the post-season.

On to the Second Round- At the end of a tight contest against La Grange, the Spartans brought out the late-game heroics to win the first play-off game in school history.  When the buzzer sounded, the gym at Morton Ranch High School in Katy looked a lot like Scarborough High School West.

Two of Spartans District Foes Still Going in the Play-offs

The two teams that finished ahead of Scarborough in District 22-4A are still alive after one week of the play-offs.  Sterling, who won the district, is scheduled to face Hardin-Jefferson in the Region III quarter-finals.  District 22-4A runner-up Wheatley next meets Silsbee, who knocked off Scarborough Friday night.

Interestingly, two teams who defeated Scarborough in the Sweeny Tournament in December will clash in the Region IV Quarter-finals.  Columbia and Wharton take the court against each other on Tuesday in Stafford.

Silsbee Too Much for the Spartans in Season Finale

Silsbee proved to have too much firepower for Scarborough as they pulled away in the second half to beat the Spartans, 94-56 in Friday night's Area play-off game.  The Spartans trailed by 10 at halftime, but the Silsbee lead snowballed throughout the second half.  Silsbee (28-5) moves on to face Wheatley in the Regional Quarter-finals.

The Spartans, who end their season with a 23-10 record, were led in scoring by Jorge Martinez, 14, Quinton Hudson, 10 and Jonathan Garcia-Loza, 9.  All five Spartan seniors, including Martinez and Garcia-Loza, scored in their final high school game. You can see the full boxscore here.

Everything you need to know about the Spartans play-off game Friday against the Silsbee Tigers, who finished the regular season first in District 24-4A.  Friday's game is scheduled to tip-off at 7 pm at Channelview High School.

PLEASE NOTE:  The game will be held at Bill Neal Gym, which is across the street from the high school.  The gym is in front of the football stadium.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT SILSBEE BASKETBALL HISTORY

This season marks Silsbee's 11th consecutive post-season appearance.  Over that period, the Tigers have claimed seven district titles, won 27 play-off games and advanced to the state tournament twice.
Needless to say, as a basketball program, Silsbee's accomplishments dwarf Scarborough's.  However, you never know what will happen on the basketball court.

Spartans vs. Silsbee, Friday Night in Channelview

Scarborough's Area Round play-off game vs. Silsbee is scheduled for Friday night, February 27 at 7 pm at Channelview High School. Silsbee (27-5) is ranked #10 in the state.

Janacek's Big Shot Leads Spartans to First Play-off Victory

A three-point shot by Hunter Janacek with less than 40 seconds remaining (pictured above) gave Scarborough (23-9) a lead they would not relinquish as they knocked off La Grange, 68-64 Tuesday night in the bi-district round of the play-offs.  The win is the first basketball play-off win in Scarborough's history* (as best as our research can determine).

Scarborough next faces Silsbee at a time and place still to be determined in the Area Round of the post-season.

Janacek, a junior, scored 15 of the Spartans' 20 points in the fourth quarter.  He repeatedly forced the action against La Grange's guards, drawing numerous fouls, and hitting the resulting free throws. Janacek ended the game 14 of 15 (eight of nine in the final quarter) at the charity stripe. Two of La Grange's guards fouled out as a result of their attempts to contain Janacek.

Just prior to Janacek's shot, La Grange lost possession of the ball when a foul called against Scarborough was overturned.  One official called a blocking foul on Spartan freshmen Quentin Hudson when he was involved in a collision with a Leopard player driving to the basket.

Hudson's foul would have resulted in two free throws for La Grange, who was in the double bonus. However, after a brief discussion between two of the three officials, the blocking foul was overruled, and a player control foul was assessed to the La Grange player.  Janacek's shot followed directly after this sequence of events.

Hudson was the leader of the Spartans offense through the first three quarters, when he registered 20 of his 23 points. Janacek finished the contest with 24 points. Senior Jonathan Garcia-Loza also reached double digits with 11 points.
